According to a survey, it’s mostly couples who are between the ages of 20 to 30 years old who get into long-distance marriages. You may ask why a couple would want to spend a lot of time apart? The reasons vary with each couple, but these are the most common ones:

1. Careers

One of the most common reasons why couples are apart is because one is set to grow in his or her career. Or, their career obligates them to move to a different country. One good example would be those who are working on cruise ships or ships that transport cargo. Couples who are in these situations don’t see each other for months or even years.

2. Living The Comfortable Life

It’s possible that two people are so comfortable with their current living circumstance that they don’t want to change anything. Let’s say your girlfriend is from Asia and you live in New York. You may visit each other from time to time, but you don’t want to give up the life that you have built from your corner of the globe.

3. Family Situations

There are cases where one person is not willing to leave their family behind. It’s pretty common in Asian cultures where families are mostly tight-knit. It’s also possible that the parents are already elderly and the son or daughter is the one taking care of them.

Although couples who are in a long-distance marriage make it look so easy, you have to understand that there’s a lot of communication happening. Talking to each other through phone calls or video calls become a daily necessity. One has to be very transparent and open to the other.
