What Science Says About Your Dating Preferences Will Surprise You

Each of us has our own dating preferences. Some of our preferences might be similar, but they won’t be exactly the same because who you want to meet may be different from who another person wants to meet. But, a recent research study shows that there’s a common denominator in all of our dating preferences; it changes as we grow older.

Dating Preferences That Changes As We Age

Because of the popularity of online dating, researchers now find it easier to collect data and study different aspects of dating and relationships. That’s exactly what researchers from Queensland University of Technology did.

They analysed thousands of online dating profiles involving about 41,000 people. The participants’ ages ranged from 18 to 80 years old. The study focuses on educational attainment as a significant dating preference that changes with age.

Result Of The Research

People in the online dating hemisphere who have attained higher education tend to reach out to those who have a similar level of education. But, and this is the interesting part, as these highly educated individuals age, they care less about their potential partner’s education.

The phenomenon is opposite with online daters who have a lower level of education. As they grow older, they tend to care more about dating people who have a higher level of education than they have or had.

Researchers have found that the level of education represents economic standing and future provisions. It’s also been observed that older women and younger men tend to contact online daters who have a higher level of education.

The Theory Of Homogamy

Scientists used to believe that people chose partners who are of the same socioeconomic status, ethnicity, religion, or age. They call this the theory of homogamy. Now, because we’ve been presented with so many choices, our dating preferences have changed and, in a way, evolved.

That’s why a lot of researchers say that online dating has opened its doors to a whole new way of meeting people. It has changed the game, and it will continue to do so. Who knows? Another one of our dating preferences might just change five years from now.
