Does Your Relationship Have The Ideal Age Gap?

To most of us, age is just a number. However, there are some who are actually particular about the age gap they might have with their future partner. Thus, there’s the well-known formula of “divide the age by two then add seven”. This formula supposedly gives you the youngest age for your potential match to have. For example, if you are thirty years old, you divide that by two, you get fifteen and then you add seven. Then, you get twenty-two. But, is this really the ideal age gap?

Debunking The Myth On The Ideal Relationship Age Gap

Based on a 2014 study from Emory University, couples who have a mere one year age gap have a 3% chance of getting divorced. When the age gap is five years, the chance for a divorce increases to 18%. This research analyzed about 3,000 couples. So, it seems that the ideal gap is one year, based on the result.

On the other hand, one of the researchers, Hugo Mialon, mentioned that the data might show correlation but it doesn’t reveal the causation. Couples in the study might not have been the right matches for each other, thus the divorce. Even the couples with the one year gap could still encounter issues and problems along the course of their relationship.

Is There An Ideal Age Gap?

Did you know that Beyonce and Jay-Z, the music world’s power couple, have an age gap of 12 years? There’s also George and Amal Clooney who are 17 years apart. There’s also Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively who have an eleven-year age gap.

There are so many examples in real life and in Hollywood that debunk the myth of an ideal age gap. So, the answer is no. There is no ideal age gap for a couple to have to avoid divorce or relationship problems. It all boils down to how a couple connects and interacts with each other.

Dating Tip

When you are online dating or dating in real life, don’t look at the person’s age. What you need to look at is your compatibility. Do you like the same things? Do you have similar goals in life? Are you on the same page about the future? It is these factors that will determine if a relationship will make it or not. It’s not the age that gets to determine a couple’s success.
