We all want our relationships to improve, but doing so isn’t as easy as we think. That’s why most relationships of today struggle. A lot of couples don’t know where to start to improve a relationship that has been holding on by a thread.
Start Here To Improve A Relationship That Has Been Struggling
The truth is, improving a relationship may not be easy but we can always start with the little things that we do everyday. It’s going to be a process but the more of it we do, the better our relationship will be.
Eli J. Finkel, a professor at Northwestern University, suggests three practical ways to improve any relationship gradually:
1. The Willingness Should Be Present
If you really want a relationship that meets your expectations, be sure to work on it with a little bit of extra effort. You also need to make sure that your partner is willing to do the same thing. For example, if you only talked to your partner at night when you get home, why not try taking a few minutes off work to chat over the phone. During your break, call your partner just to see how his or her day is going.
2. Adjust Your Perception
The second option that you can do is to simply practice adjusting your perception. For example, if your partner is late or has forgotten your birthday, you can say “he or she is having a bad day, probably” instead of saying “what a jerk”.
This is not similar to making excuses because you need to deal with how you are feeling towards your partner at the end of the day. Talk out the issues and try to see things from your partner’s perspective.
3. Lower Your Expectations
Every couple wants their relationship to be perfect, but according to Professor Finkel, it’s when you stop trying so hard that things simply click. Start by lowering your expectations. From that, work on your happiness and bond first.
It’s the little things that we do that can improve a relationship that has been experiencing a number of issues. The key to this is consistency so keep doing these tiny acts even if you don’t see the results yet. As you go further, you will eventually see the fruits of your efforts.
